Last summer, Lions Sports Academy decided to run a week long rugby residential for girls at Aldro School in Godalming, Surrey. Having never run a residential before, everyone involved was uncertain as to how the week might play out, but by the end of the week there was one thing that everyone was certain about & that was how much of a resounding success it had been.
It is with great pleasure that, following on from last year’s success, Lions Sports Academy have decided to run another rugby residential, this time during the Easter holidays at Boxhill School in Dorking. Ho..

Some people are destined to be involved in rugby from a young age, and this can certainly be said of this week's Tuesday Talent Laura-Alice Smith. Laura-Alice has been involved in rugby from a very young age, representing Worcester Warriors at Junior age grade & was in the process of selection for the U15s England Development squad when a severe ankle injury prevented her from taking her career at the top level any further.
But this is what makes Laura-Alice so special, in that she did not let this injury get her down but instead turned it into an advantage by getting involved..

"He certainly won a number of fans personally and supporters for Quins today". This is what Roger Brosch, Wimbledonian Warriors RFC Junior Chairman, said about Harlequins Fly-Half Marcus Smith after he joined Lions for a coaching at Wimbledonian Warriors RFC last Sunday.
These words will be of no surpise to many, considering Marcus is highly rated both within the Harlequins community and by fans of English rugby. Marcus proved to be a very popular choice amongst the kids; who seemed to get stuck in and will have learnt some new skills under the tutelage of the Harlequins ace..

"It's about understanding how to manage their bodies". These were the words of Will Page, Lions Sports Academy Director of Athlete Development & Lecturer in Sports Rehabilitation at St Mary's University, during his ADP talk to Middlesex U16 parents at Grasshoppers RFC last night. It is not just about the understanding of knowing one's body during growth, that Will was referring too, but also the underlying mental factor of understanding how to properly overcome injury and having the correct sports rehab to make sure that it does not occur again.

Vicky Fleetwood is a woman of many talents; a former junior hurdler, a personal trainer and a Rugby World Cup winner. The Nuneaton-born diet and nutrition adviser began playing rugby at the age of 14 after tiring of watching her brother play. Vicky moved to Saracens from Lichfield after the Women’s World Cup success in 2014, where she made six appearances. Two of these were off the bench but the front row was handed a start in the final where England beat Canada 21-9. She overcame an injury to make the 2017 Women's World Cup and made three appea..

Lions returned to GoFest at Surrey Sports Park bank holiday weekend introducing tag rugby and Futsal to families. Here are a few highlights.
The last twelve months have not given South African rugby fans much to smile about. Defeats to the likes of Italy, Wales, Argentina and Ireland have seen the Springboks plummet to a lowest ever world ranking of 7th and it is difficult to see how things will improve.
Whilst they still have some supreme talent at their disposal, the pool is not as full as it once was. However, the malaise runs deeper than simply a lack of fresh talent. The Boks are wracked with division and disjointedness on and off the pitch, and the appointment of Allister Coetzee as coach has done nothing to arrest their d..

As we draw near to Europe’s end of season showpiece, the Champions League final, we are greeted with what has become a familiar sight. For the fifth consecutive year, England has no representative.

Well that’s it for another lung-busting, gut-wrenching, bone-breaking Premiership Season. Almost. All barring the small matter of the play-offs. And of course the slightly self-indulgent pageant of the final. Ok, so it’s not all over, but the regular, ordinary, bog-standard season is, and this calls for something of a round-ahead. It’s a hotchpotch of a round-up and a look-ahead, for those of you who aren’t au fait with the lingo.
This Bank Holiday Monday saw Guildford Under-18s celebrate the phenomenal achievement of
getting their hands on The National Colts Cup. Guildford’s future stars – under the stewardship of

Rumoured to be the fastest growing sport in the U.K, Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar all used to play Futsal ..

There are four specific deficits which have been identified as the potential
cause of this injury risk – ligament dominance, quadriceps dominance, leg dominance and trunk
dysfunction – and with the right coaching from a qualified Strength and Conditioning professional,
any areas of deficit can be identified and worked on.
The 31st Africa Cup of Nations – or to give it its catchier, 21st century sci-fi name AFCON 2017 – passed by over the past month without much in the way of fanfare. Of course, there were the obligatory biennial complaints from European managers at losing their star players midway through the season, but even these were muted in comparison to ..
Once every four years, a momentous thing happens. The warring tribes of the British Isles put aside their differences, forget colonial pasts and call a temporary ceasefire to unite under one fearsome, blood-red banner. Once every twelve years, they mount an assault on the most formidable enemy of all: the Maori tribes of the South Seas. 2017 is that year.
This may all sound a tad glib, like it sho..
The dawn of a new era is upon us. The balance of power has shifted. A new global force stirs in the east. No, I’m not quoting Lord of the Rings, although I probably could be. Rather, these are the kind of phrases you will have encountered when reading of the rampant rise of Chinese football. But is the hype justified?
In recent times there has been something of a mass ex..
The Rugby World Cup semi-finals in September 2015 seem a long time ago. The four best teams in what is becoming an increasingly global game pitted their wits against one another in West London. Not one of the four had a cold Christmas. Not one of them had a gruelling domestic season ahead of them. Each one of them descended upon Twickenham to confirm what the rugby world knew had been happening for some time: the southern hemisphere had officially claimed ownership..
There’s one on every street, numerous in every city. Incomprehensible to the old school, bloated pub-dweller, and church to the endorphin-crazed, carb-counting, beautiful young things. Many are open 24 hours a day, and all are packed to the air-conditioned rafters with people of all shapes, sexes, sizes and goals. To one, the cover of Men’s Fitness beckons. To another, staving off the early onset of age is enough. To all, the gym is, and has been for some time, a staple part of life – a one-way ticket to self-improvement, self-confidence and self-worth.
Whilst most o..
As we reach the halfway point in the 2016-17 Premier League season, one thing alone seems strikingly certain: the health of the English domestic game has been restored to somewhere close to its mid-noughties pomp. To say this is to imply that it has been somewhat lacking of late, which might come as a surprise to some of you. Yet, delicious as it may have been in its undiluted ludicrousness, Leicester City being crowned champions does not point to a highly competitive, continentally-dominant Premier League. Quite t..
At the risk of sounding like every other cliché-wrapped bundle of festive round-up codswallop: this year has been quite the rollercoaster. Unprecedented successes have been followed by mind-numbingly predictable failures. Normal orders have been restored, usurped and downright destroyed. Reputations have been fortified ..

It is a sign of changing times that the early season international breaks are, to most of us, something of an inconvenience. The lustre of the Premier League is now such that it far eclipses its international counterpart for excitement, drama and quality, and any interruption to its seemingly endless stream of high-class theatre is treated irksome to those who plan their weekends around it. Now it’s all over and done with till March, we can get back to the opulent footballing indulgences of West Brom v Burnley on a Monday night. Thank god.

Barring a woeful batting display against Pakistan at The Oval – a rather damp climax to an otherwise bright summer – England could have found themselves on top of the test-match tree. As it is, they don’t. Still, with this in mind, it seems counter-intuitive to look ahead at this winter’s tour with glum pessimism, regardless of whether this may or may not be ‘the English way of doing things’.
However, it really is difficult to feel anything but. The overriding view of our chances this winter is, a..
The international rugby calendar is a matter of serious contention. Since the advent of the World Cup, the expansion of the Five and Tri-nations, and the introduction of annual, trans-global tours to and from the southern hemisphere, the fixture list has become a tad crowded, to say the least. In the past thirteen months, the home nations have played World Cup warm up fixtures, the World Cup itself – with varying degrees of length and intensity – the Six N..
Spoiled by pulse-racing drama on a weekly basis for nine months of the year, ravenous after the famine of a predictably dismal international summer, mid-August found the football fan in a state of delirious excitement. No longer were kicks to be got from the gossip columns. No longer were we to rely on social interaction to fill our weekends. The Premier League was back.
However, as the du..

The world of sports science – with its biomechanics, performance enhancement, and mulsculoskeletal training methods – can be a confusing place for the layman. Until the past few decades, these words didn’t even exist, and to many they still don’t. However, sports science is utterly integral to the progression of any aspiring young partic..
For the first time since 1924, in reflection of its status as one of the world’s fastest growing sports, rugby returns to the Olympic arena this summer. Rio de Janeiro will play host to 24 teams – both men’s and women’s – competing to be crowned Olympic champions in rugby sevens, the XV-a-side game’s younger, quicker, sleeker sibling.
Rugby’s Olympic renaissance is intriguing, if not particularly controversial. The International Olympic Committee voted overwhelmingly in favour of reinstating rugby as an Olympic sport, ..

Monday saw the first full day’s wash-out at Roland Garros in 16 years, and prompted calls from French Open tournament director, Guy Forget, to immediately install a roof in preparation for next year’s tournament. “We’ve talked about this roof in Paris for 15 years already”, he seethed, “today is the day to just say stop”. Clearly, the chap means business, and one would suspect that as his sentiments are echoed from most corners – with talk of tarnished global images and bureaucratic Fr..
The inability of English cricketers to sit at the top table of the global game has perplexed this nation’s ardent following for a long time. We gave the game to the world, and the world produced the kind of players we could only dream of; or, more accurately, gave us nightmares for decades on end. Of course, we have produced world-beaters. Truman, Gooch, Botham, Flintoff, Pietersen, Harmison were all for a time peerless. The key phrase here, however, is ‘for a time’; no English player has dominated world cricket with any amount of longevit..
Much has been made of the since-deposed, arch-scoundrel Michel Platini’s decision to expand the European Championships from 16 to 24 teams. With the inclusion of teams from the sheer periphery of European football – and the fact that almost nobody bar Ireland and Albania is likely to be knocked out at the group stage – critics have lambasted a decision which, they say, has ensured a dilution of quality and drama in what was once a sure-fire blockbuster from start to finish. In truth, it is hard to envisage – especially given Platini’s track record of..

Why have England mustered one semi-final appearance in a half-century of World Cups? Why have Argentina and Brazil reached eight finals between them within the same time frame?
The answers are simple. Just take a look at the grass-roots development of young footballers, both here and in South America.
In England, kids slog it out with one another on miserable Sunday mornings, hacking about in the mud, contending with gale-force wind ..

Rugby is certainly not a sport for those of faint heart, spirit, or body. Recently-retired Welsh back row Jonathan Thomas summarised the gladiatorial mentality of the rugby player perfectly, saying that “you need to want to go out and hurt people”. Undeniably, this perception rings true. There is an accepted brutality to the sport; a devilish undercurrent that is entirely integral to the game’s growing global appeal to players and spectators alike. No-one involved in rugby would want to take that away.
However, when Thomas’ summation is viewed..
Cycling has for some time stood atop the British sporting podium. The exploits of Messrs Wiggins and Froome in Le Tour, coupled with that Herculean Olympic effort on home soil four years ago, built upon an already impressive pedigree to catapult cycling to the forefront of the nation’s sporting consciousness. No longer was it seen merely as a fashionable way to get around Cambridge; cycling became something that happened in a velodrome. It was pure, undiluted drama, it was the Knight and Dame-making showpiece of the Olympics, and it was undeniably ours to dominate..
Congratulations to Leicester City worthy champions of the Barclays Premier League; quite an incredible feat.
To those in the know it is painted as a hitherto unrivalled feat of triumph against all the odds; a real-life David vs Goliath in which David’s hand-made, bodge-job slingshot has pierced the expensively assembled, diamanté-clad armour of the petrodollar-backed Goliath. In short, for those of us who have witnessed the time-honoured domination of the footballing elite on a weekly basis, the scale of Leicester’s achievement is obvious, in that it was completely an..

We had a great response to The Mall Football Camp, with the pupils 3 favourite coaches Theo, Kieran.W and Kieran.T everyone knew it was going to be a good 2 days from the word go.

In the afternoons we were able to go into matches where the players were automatically taking what they have learnt in the morning and showcasing it in..
It was great to be back at Old Wimbledonians after a short break. We had some very gifted players turn up which made it a great camp as the skill level was so high.
As it was a two day course we were able to concentrate on contact on the first day playing loads of games to get the boys making tackles. The camp also included work on special awareness and decision making.
"Robert, who won player of the camp is one of the strongest players I have had to pleasure to work with as not only were his skills excellent, his overall attitude was outstanding..
It was fantastic to return to Guildford RFC after such a successful camp in February. We had some skilful players turn up along with some big personalities!
Across the three days we worked on beating your man, contact area, ball work and evasive skills. It was exceptionally hard to pick our player of the camp as the quality was so high.
It was a pleasure to spend the three days back at Guildford and I look forward to seeing everyone soon at future camps or ADP.
Kieran Ttouli - Lead Coach
During the Easter holidays Lions ran another successful camp down at Esher RFC.
Over the three days the players that attended worked on developing their core rugby and motor skills, whilst still having fun. It was a joy to see them depart each day with smiles on their faces.
The U12s at Esher are regulars on the Lions Camp. It is great to witness their improvment which is evidenced by their results such as winning their tour of Jersey.
Esher are blessed with a high standard of players and as a coach it is a pleasure to..

As always we had a great group of athletes ranging from U6s all the way through to U15s.
During the camp we focused on aspects such as decision making with the ball in hand, tackle technique using the 6 key points of the tackle as well as breakdown skills and tips and tricks to beat a defender.
Outside of our skill based exercises we played some games of kick tennis in which some of ..
Over the Easter holidays Lions ran their first camp in Bucks at High Wycombe Rugby Club, and it was a great success.
Over the three days the players worked on both technical and tactical aspects of their game as well as physical qualities such as strength and endurance. These skills were developed in a fun and enjoyable environment with all of the kids going home with a smile on their face each day.
